Following on from the success of her first single, premiered on TheMusic.com.au with nationwide radio airplay, Mihka Chee is set to release her debut EP, ‘Both’; a melange of pretty and personal indie pop with tiger-sharp teeth.
Hailing from South Auckland, New Zealand, Mihka now resides on Sydney’s northern beaches. ‘Both’ was recorded over five days at Housefox Studios with Ryan Miller (Black Rheno) producing, Oscar Dawson from Holy Holy (Ali Barter, Alex Lahey) mixing and Andrew Edgson (Studios 301) mastering.
Launching her solo project in late 2015, Chee has since acquired a strong local following, including at the fabled Newtown Social Club (RIP), and The Record Crate in Glebe. Her three-piece band is gearing up for a run of shows in Sydney’s inner west at the re-vamped Newsagency, Staves Brewery and Valve Bar, with the ‘Both’ EP Launch on 26th August at Captain Cook Hotel.
Mihka has also morphed a veritable mine of life experience and turned it into a debut EP, putting a spotlight glare on her past and present relationships. The results are evident in the EP’s revealing lyrics: she doesn’t shy away from the fact that the songs are autobiographical. Take for example Chee’s nod to the ’90s, ‘Be Mine’ - a pretty yet bittersweet love song about the reality of her relationship with her boyfriend, fights, tears and all – or title track, ‘Both’, where a post-argument resolution provided inspiration during the recording process. Although ‘Both’ was a last-minute addition, it ended up being the stand-out for Chee’s band and engineers and a natural choice as the EP title.
A music nerd from way back, Mihka went to her sister’s violin lesson at just a day old, and was hooked for life. When she was 15, her dad chauffeured her band on an 8 hour drive from Wellington to Auckland, just so they could play at a friend’s house party. At 21, she borrowed money from her sister to fund a trip to LA, where her previous band recorded their first full-length album.
Seamlessly switching between violin, piano, ukulele and guitar, Mihka mixes a classical music upbringing with punk rock teenage years to create strong, sassy indie rock. Mihka Chee releases ‘Both’ EP independently via iTunes, e-stores and streaming platforms worldwide on Friday 25th August.
